Shader loader
OptiFine
OptiFine 26.1.2— latest build HD U K1 pre2
OptiFine bundles a shader loader with dozens of graphics tweaks — connected textures, dynamic lighting, zoom, custom sky. It is the original shader loader for Minecraft Java and still the default choice on the Forge loader.

OptiFine has been the go-to Minecraft Java optimization mod for over a decade. It installs as either a standalone JAR (no other mods needed) or as a Forge mod, and adds hundreds of graphics settings on top of Minecraft — the most famous being the built-in shader loader. If you're running Forge modpacks on 1.20 or earlier, OptiFine is still the most reliable way to add shaders without switching loaders.
What you get
Why OptiFine?
Built-in shader loader
Load any OptiFine-format shader pack (BSL, Complementary, Sildur's, SEUS, Continuum, Chocapic) from a single Video Settings menu. No dependencies to add.
Runs standalone
OptiFine works on the vanilla launcher without Fabric or Forge — one JAR, one profile. Ideal when you want shaders without a full modded setup.
Graphics tweaks
Dynamic lighting, connected textures (CTM), custom sky/colors/fog, animated textures, better grass and snow, natural textures, emissive textures — all packaged in.
Forge-compatible
Drop OptiFine into a Forge mods folder to add shaders to any Forge modpack. It coexists with the vast majority of mods on 1.20 and below.
Zoom key & configurable UI
Ships with a bindable zoom key, fine-grained render distance/quality sliders, and dozens of per-setting toggles the vanilla launcher never exposes.
Custom entity models & textures
Supports CEM (Custom Entity Models) and CIT (Custom Item Textures), letting resource packs reshape mobs, tools, and armor beyond vanilla limits.

Install
How to install OptiFine
Standalone route (no Forge)
- 1Open the vanilla Minecraft launcher and run your target version once so files are created.
- 2Download the OptiFine JAR for that exact version from optifine.net/downloads.
- 3Double-click the JAR — the installer runs and adds an 'OptiFine' profile to the launcher.
- 4Launch that profile once, then close Minecraft so the folders exist.
- 5Drop shader ZIPs into .minecraft/shaderpacks/ (Windows: %appdata%/.minecraft/shaderpacks/).
- 6In-game: Options → Video Settings → Shaders → pick a pack.
Forge route (for modpacks)
- 1Install Forge for your Minecraft version from files.minecraftforge.net.
- 2Download the OptiFine JAR for the same version.
- 3Place the OptiFine JAR directly in .minecraft/mods/ (do NOT run the installer).
- 4Launch the Forge profile, then add shader packs as above.
Compatibility
OptiFine supports Minecraft Java from 1.7 through the latest release (26.1.2). It works standalone on the vanilla launcher and as a mod on Forge for every supported version. On modern Fabric/NeoForge setups, use Iris + Sodium instead — OptiFine does not install as a Fabric mod.
OptiFine vs. the other loader
OptiFine offers the widest feature set out of any single mod (shaders, CTM, CEM, zoom, dynamic lights, custom sky) and the easiest install for vanilla players. Iris + Sodium delivers substantially higher FPS on the same hardware and stays open source, but only on Fabric / NeoForge. Pick OptiFine for Forge modpacks and pure-vanilla setups; pick Iris for Fabric modpacks and maximum performance.
Troubleshooting
Common problems
Installer error: 'file not found'
Launch the vanilla Minecraft version once first, then re-run the OptiFine installer. It needs the target version's JAR to be present.
Shaders menu is missing
Confirm the OptiFine profile is selected in the launcher — not vanilla. On Forge, confirm the OptiFine JAR is in mods/ for the correct Forge version.
Crash: 'incompatible mod'
Match OptiFine's version to Forge's version exactly. Newer OptiFine builds require newer Forge; check the compatibility notes on the OptiFine download page.
Black screen after enabling a shader
Update your GPU drivers. If the pack targets a newer OpenGL feature than your OptiFine build supports, pick an older shader pack version or a Preview OptiFine build.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is OptiFine free?+
Yes. OptiFine is freeware. Donors get early access to preview builds, but every stable release is free.
Do I need Forge for OptiFine?+
No. OptiFine's own installer adds a standalone profile to the vanilla launcher. Use Forge only if you're combining OptiFine with other Forge mods.
Does OptiFine work on Fabric?+
No. Use Iris + Sodium for the Fabric and NeoForge loaders — they read the same shader packs.
Which shader packs work on OptiFine?+
Every pack listed as 'OptiFine' or 'OptiFine-compatible' — essentially the entire catalog: BSL, Complementary, Sildur's, SEUS, Chocapic13, Continuum, Rethinking Voxels, Solas, and more.
Why is OptiFine slower than Iris?+
OptiFine keeps Minecraft's original chunk renderer with add-ons layered on top; Sodium (used by Iris) rewrites that renderer for modern GPUs. The performance gap widens on high render distances and shaders.
